Smoking prohibited: 01-07-2008
From the 1st of July on smoking is prohibited in all pubs, bars, concerthalls etc. There has been a lot of protest against it, but there are already a bunch of countries who went before us (us being the Netherlands) without major problems. In Denmark the people even started to drink more, and their beer prices are sky high. The only thing I worry about is the smell. Normally after a night out you smell like old smoke, which is bad. But the smoke also drowned out all other stenches while going out, for instance spilled wine and beer and maybe worse, old sweat. I have to smell for myself before I do a happy dance that I'll never have to wash out the stench of smoke the morning after a good night of drinking.
Has your country already prohibited smoking inside pubs etc? Or are there plans? And are you against it or not?

The UK banned it last year. The major difference has been that you now can't get into any pubs etc. through the crowd of people huddled on the doorstep with cigarettes in hand.
It's nice to go to a gig and not come back smelling like an ashtray though... but some of the other smells that have replaced it are not so welcome.
I even heard that there is going to be some spray that will make the bar/pub/etc. smell like before: like cigarettes and beer.
Because, like Arjan already said, you are going to smell 'other things'....
Ireland amazingly introduced a blanket ban a few years back, and it's been a roaring success!
Just because I was curious (and of course the weather was nice and I was craving for beer) I went into town yesterday. I laughed my ass of because the first pub I walked into (Ome Ko) was 100% empty except for the barkeep. It was that way all over the place.
I (with a friend) decided to sit on a terrace because there was no one inside. But the smell in 'Ome Ko' wasn't real bad..have to try again when the weather drives people inside.
hehe a blanket ban.
We'll see. As long as the weather's good overhere, the terraces are open till...dunno LATE.
basically Ireland left no room for debate, every workplace (which means EVERYWHERE really)was to be smoke free.
We didn't have the weather for terraces so it was instantly noticeable.
people gather outside for their smoke, and some pubs have build smoking shelters outside.
But no real bad reaction.
I'm REALLY looking forward to having a beer here (in Holland) this weekend, some of the pubs I like are real stinkers, so it will be interesting!
Do you know what the policy on coffeeshops is? Had a talk about it with a friend..I hear different stories all around.
Hi Arjan
It is prohibitted by law to smoke in public places. But it only rests in parper.
How are you Arjan?
hmm so there aren't any checks with big fines? Overhere a pub or whatever get's a 3000€ (around 4500 U$) fine when they allow people to smoke. Not sure yet how it's going to work out.
Overhere all is well! I'm going to Rome next monday and fly for the first time, really looking forward to it. Good to see you back in the blogoshpere.
